Run your pack automatically with tick.json
Don't want to type /function every time? A tick.json tells Minecraft to run your function on its own — automatically, every game tick, as soon as the pack loads on a world.
-
What tick.json does
tick.json is a small file in your pack's functions folder that lists functions Minecraft should run every tick (20 times a second) once the behavior pack is active. It's how packs "just work" the moment you enable them — no commands required from the player. -
Turn it on when you create a pack
The easiest way: in New Project, leave "Run my sample function every tick" switched on. MiniBench adds a tick.json pointing at your starter function, so it runs automatically. Turn it off if you'd rather trigger things yourself. -
tick.json vs /function
Two ways to run a function, each with a place:
· tick.json — great for things that should always be on: timers, scoreboards, ambient effects, "world logic." Runs constantly, so keep those functions light.
· /function name — great for one-shot actions you trigger on demand: building a structure, giving items, starting an event. Runs once, when you call it.
A common pattern: a small tick.json watches for something, and calls a heavier /function only when needed.
Try both.
See where each fits by building a pack and running it in Minecraft.
